An Evening with Michael Jai White
I recently had the pleasure of attending a fundraising event for The Ralphola Taylor Community Center YMCA. The event was An Evening with Michael Jai White. It was great to see the multi-talented actor, writer and director Michael Jai White back in our hometown of Bridgeport, Conn. to help raise money for the local community center where he spent much of his time as a youth.
The evening was filled with music, food and entertainment supplied by the RTCC YMCA Dance Ensemble. The highlight of the evening was when Michael began sharing stories of how important the Community Center and the staff were in helping to shape him into the man that he is today. He also stressed the importance of having The Ralphola Taylor Community Center YMCA open to the future youths of Bridgeport.

Gene Colan RIP

Just read that comic book legend, Gene Colan has passed away at the age of 84. Although I never met Mr. Colan, I credit him with fueling my passion for comic books as well as my desire to one day become a comic book creator myself. Reading Gene Colan's work on titles like Captain America and Daredevil during the late 60s and 70s brought me such pleasure as a child that instantly I knew that I would create my own comic books one day and try to pass along the same pleasure that I got as a child, to those who would read my books one day. In honor of Mr. Colan, I'm about to take some of my old issues of Daredevil out of the protective plastics and sit back with a cold soda and a bag of chips and enjoy myself. Gone but not forgotten, your works will live on, to be enjoyed for years to come. Thank you Gene. My condolences go to Gene's family and friends. -

Dwayne McDuffie, RIP

Just heard the news that writer, producer and editor Dwayne McDuffie has passed away. Although Dwayne and I only met briefly in passing at various comic book conventions, I feel I've lost a friend. Now, I'm sorry that I never took advantage of those brief encounters to tell him what a source of inspiration he was for me.
Somewhere in my garage is a copy of a business magazine that dates back to the early 90s and the cover story features Dwayne McDuffie and his co-founding of Milestone Media. After reading this story my desire to have my own comic book publishing company was ignited. For years I've kept the magazine around and would read the story over and over as fuel for my desire.
Today I have my very own publishing company; although small, the company is growing, thanks in a large way to "brothers" like Dwayne McDuffie who pave the way for creators of color and showed us that, no matter the color of your skin, if the quality of your work stands out, then it can't be ignored.
My condolences go out to his family. Dwayne McDuffie is as big a hero as those he wrote about. He will be missed, but not forgotten.
